I highly recommend BDSM for Writers as a resource for writers who want to write in the BDSM genre with authority, understanding and compassion. Dr. Ferrer covers a ton of material from the basics to advanced. The emotional and psychological connections in the lifestyle were explained in great depth. This is also a great read for non-writers curious about Dominance and submission and power exchange relationships.
If you are are writing erotic BDSM romance, this is THE reference to have. Dr. Charley, a trained therapist therapist gives you the excruciating (pun intended) detail of BDSM fundamentals, psychology, rituals and protocols. She spends a great deal of time talking about the underlying power exchange that's necessary for all good BDSM relationships.
But more than anything, Dr. Charley writes with tolerance for all aspects of the community and encourages people to explore uncharted territory with their own bodies and emotions. At the same time she discusses safety measures that are so important in the BDSM community to insure no one is physically, emotionally or psychologically harmed.
I have read books on this complex subject, but none had the exceptional descriptions or were as easily understood as Dr. Charley Ferrer's book "BDSM for Writers."
I highly recommend this book as a resource for writers who want to write in the BDSM genre with authority. If you are already writing erotic BDSM romance, to me this is the best reference to have. Dr. Charley is a trained therapist, and gives you a good amount of detail for BDSM fundamentals, psychology, rituals and protocols, without over loading you, in other words enough to make you competent as well as encouraging you to explore more, and further with your own experiences.
Dr. Charley writes with tolerance for all aspects of the community. While at the same time discussing safety measures that are so important in the BDSM community, for the physical, mental and emotional safety of the D and the s in the relationship. She emphasizes the mantras of SSC-Safe, sane and consensual, and RACK, Risk aware consensual Kink, and I am in complete agreement with her.
If I could give six stars I would.
I've actually met and spoken to the author and she's completely awesome and really knows her audience. She understands that not everyone wants to write 50 Shades of Crap.
